Woods, ponds and bay

Brewster yards and the shade question

Brewster has a lot of green space. Nickerson State Park covers about 1,900 acres, Long Pond and Cliff Pond draw swimmers all summer, and at low tide the sand flats on Cape Cod Bay seem to stretch out forever.

All those trees are lovely, and they're also why many wooded lawns struggle. Grass wants sun, and a yard under pines and oaks gets a little less of it every year as the trees fill in. A few changes help a lot:

  1. 1

    Raise the blade in shade

Grass in shade needs more leaf to catch what light it gets. Mowing higher under trees keeps it from thinning out.

  2. 2

    Seed with shade in mind

Fine fescues handle shade far better than the sun-loving grasses in most seed mixes. Overseed with them in early fall.

  3. 3

    Clear leaves more than once

Under oaks, one fall cleanup often isn't enough. A second pass keeps late leaves from smothering the grass.

  4. 4

    Know when to stop fighting

Where grass just won't grow, a mulched bed or a few shade-loving shrubs can look far better than a patchy lawn.

Regular mowing, set at the right height for sun or shade, with the edges trimmed.

  • Mulch Installation

  • Shrub Planting

Shrubs and small bushes planted with proper soil preparation, including in those spots under the trees where the grass has given up.

  • Bush Pruning and Small Tree Trimming

Low branches and overgrown shrubs cut back to let more light reach the lawn and keep paths clear.

Brewster questions

Before you book

Does Brewster have its own fertilizer rules?

Yes. Brewster is one of the Cape Cod towns with local fertilizer rules, so it's worth checking the current requirements with the town before you feed a lawn. Anywhere on the Cape, feeding lightly, keeping fertilizer off hard surfaces and away from ponds, and skipping it before a heavy rain is the safe approach.

Can you clean up after a storm?

Yes. Fallen branches, leaves and other storm debris can be cleared as a one-time yard cleanup, even if we don't normally look after your property.

Do you work near the ponds?

We work all over Brewster, including the neighborhoods around the ponds. Yards near the water deserve extra care with fertilizer and clippings, since whatever washes off a lawn can end up in the pond.
