Chatham's fertilizer regulation, simplified
Chatham's Board of Health adopted its fertilizer regulation in 2014 to protect the groundwater, which is the town's only source of drinking water, along with the ponds and estuaries it feeds. Here's what it sets out for putting fertilizer down:
They're good habits for any lawn, and a healthy, well-mowed lawn rarely needs to push those limits.

- No fertilizer between November 12 and April 14, and none on frozen ground or dormant grass.
- None during or just before heavy rain, which the regulation defines as more than 2 inches in 24 hours, or when the soil is saturated.
- Nothing left on driveways, walkways or other hard surfaces, and nothing that can get into storm drains.
- No closer than 100 feet to any water body, or within 400 feet of a public drinking water well, without permission.
- No phosphorus unless a soil test from the past three years shows the need, or a lawn is being established or repaired.
- Up to 1.0 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet at a time with at least 20% slow release, at least four weeks apart, and no more than 3.2 pounds a year.

A seaside town through and through
Chatham was known as Monomoit before it was incorporated in 1712, and the sea has shaped it ever since. Chatham Light was established in 1808 and rebuilt in 1877, fishing boats bring their catch to the commercial fish pier, and just offshore, Monomoy Island is part of the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.
On land, the town's past is just as easy to find, from the Chatham Windmill, built in 1797, to the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, whose story starts in 1914. With the summer population reaching around 25,000, a lot of Chatham homes need to look their best right when the town is at its busiest.
