East Dennis was settled back in the 1630s, and for much of its history, life here looked toward the water. The Shiverick family started building ships in Dennis in 1815, when Asa Shiverick launched his first schooner, and later moved the shipyard near the mouth of Sesuit Creek so they could launch clipper ships. It was the only shipyard on Cape Cod to build them.
The same bay breezes that once filled those sails still shape the yards here. About East Dennis, MA
East Dennis is one of the five villages of Dennis, in the northeast part of town, with Cape Cod Bay along its northern edge and Brewster as its neighbor. It was settled in the 1630s, and about 2,600 people lived here at the 2020 census.
The village's bayside beaches include Sea Street Beach, Cold Storage Beach and Crowes Pasture Beach, and Sesuit Harbor is close by on the Dennis shore. East Dennis has drawn well-known summer residents too. The stage actress Gertrude Lawrence spent her summers here starting in 1940, not far from the Cape Playhouse, the oldest summer theater in the country.
