Old houses, older gardens

Caring for yards in a village that keeps its history

Centerville has its own historic district, and older homes are a big part of the village's character. There's the 1856 Country Store, the Centerville Historical Museum, and down by the water, Craigville Beach, which fills up every summer. Plenty of warm evenings here end with a cone from Four Seas Ice Cream on South Main Street.

Older properties come with their own quirks. Foundation plantings that have been growing for decades, a hedge that started out as a neat border and is now taller than the porch, beds with more roots in them than soil. The kindest approach is usually to prune in stages over a season or two rather than cutting everything back at once. The shrubs recover, and the house still looks like itself.

Services in Centerville

What we can take off your list

  1. 1

    Lawn Mowing in Centerville

Regular mowing at the right height for the time of year, with the edges trimmed, so the lawn looks finished and not just cut.

  2. 2

    Spring and Fall Cleanups

Leaves, fallen branches and winter debris cleared out of the beds and off the lawn, so the grass gets light and air right when it needs them.

  3. 3

    Hedge and Bush Trimming

Shaping for hedges and foundation shrubs through the growing season, whether it's a tidy boxwood edge or a tall privet screen along the road.

  4. 4

    Mulch Installation

A fresh layer in the beds each year helps sandy soil hold moisture, keeps weeds down and makes an older garden look cared for again.

  5. 5

    Weeding

Weeds pulled before they go to seed, in the beds, along the walkways and anywhere else they've crept in.

  6. 6

    Shrub Planting

Replacing a tired foundation planting or filling a gap in a border, with the soil prepared first so new shrubs root in properly.

Fertilizing in Centerville

Barnstable's fertilizer rules apply here too

Centerville is one of Barnstable's seven villages, so the town's fertilizer ordinance covers every lawn in it. The rules are there to keep nitrogen and phosphorus out of the ponds, rivers and bays, and they're simpler than they sound.

If a lawn seems to need more than that, a lack of fertilizer is rarely the real problem. Mowing too short, thatch and compacted soil are far more common culprits.

Centerville questions

Things people ask us

Do you work near Craigville Beach?

Yes, we work all over Centerville, including the neighborhoods around Craigville. Yards close to the beach usually have sandier soil and more wind, so they tend to do best with a slightly higher mowing height and a good layer of mulch in the beds.

Can you get a summer house ready before we arrive?

We can. A spring cleanup, a first mowing, trimmed hedges and fresh mulch make a big difference when you pull into the driveway for the season. Just tell us when you're arriving when you ask for your estimate.

Is one visit enough, or do I need a plan?

Either works. Plenty of jobs are one-time, like a fall cleanup or a hedge that got away from you. If you'd rather not think about the yard at all, ongoing maintenance takes care of it through the season.

About Centerville, MA

Centerville is one of the seven villages that make up the town of Barnstable, on the south side of town. Its original name was Chequaquet, usually translated as “pleasant harbor,” and the village covers about 8.8 square miles.

It has a lot packed into that space. The Craigville neighborhood and Craigville Beach sit along the shore, the Centerville Historical Museum keeps the village's story, and the 1856 Country Store is a landmark in its own right. The composer Amy Beach spent her summers here in the 1920s and 1930s, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver are buried at St. Francis Xavier cemetery.
