Eight villages on the Sound
Harbors, ponds and cranberry country
Harwich is a town of villages and water. Allens Harbor, Wychmere Harbor and Saquatucket Harbor open onto Nantucket Sound, the Herring River and the Andrews River wind in from the shore, and Long Pond, which Harwich shares with Brewster, is the largest lake on Cape Cod.
The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs through town too, and yards here range from sunny lots near the harbors to shady ones tucked into the woods. That mix means one property might need its lawn mowed high through a dry summer while the one next door is fighting shade and moss.

What Harwich's cranberry history says about your soil
Harwich is known as the birthplace of the cranberry industry. The first commercial cranberry operation started here in 1846, and the town still celebrates with the Harwich Cranberry Festival, which began in 1976 and takes place in September.
Cranberries love sandy, acidic ground, and that's exactly the kind of soil under a lot of Harwich lawns. Most lawn grasses prefer soil closer to neutral, so a lawn that stays thin no matter what you do may simply need its pH checked. A soil test is inexpensive, and it tells you whether lime would help before you spend money on more seed or fertilizer.
