Old houses by the river

What an 1801 Cape house can teach you about a yard

The Jericho Historical Center on Old Main Street is built around a full Cape house from 1801, and it stayed in the Baker family until 1955. It's a good reminder of how a Cape house is meant to sit in its yard: simple, low to the ground and framed by its plantings rather than hidden behind them.

Over the years, though, foundation shrubs creep up over the windows and hedges spread into the walkway. Keeping plantings in proportion with the house, instead of letting them swallow it, is most of what makes an older property look right.

Keeping foundation plantings in check

Foundation shrubs are the first thing people see when they look at a house, and the easiest thing to let slide. A few simple rules keep them looking good for years:

  1. 1

    Know when it blooms

Shrubs that flower in spring set their buds the year before, so prune them right after they bloom. Summer bloomers can be pruned in late winter.

  2. 2

    Keep the bottom wider

A hedge trimmed a little narrower at the top lets light reach the lower branches, so it stays full all the way down.

  3. 3

    Leave room by the house

Shrubs pressed against the siding trap moisture. A little breathing room keeps both the plant and the house healthier.

  4. 4

Don't take too much at once

Removing more than about a third of a shrub in one year can stress it. Bigger reductions are best spread over a couple of seasons.

About West Dennis, MA

West Dennis is one of the five villages of Dennis, in the town's southwest corner. It's bordered by South Dennis to the north, Dennis Port to the east and Nantucket Sound to the south, with South Yarmouth across the Bass River to the west. About 2,300 people lived here at the 2020 census.

Much of the village's story is tied to the water. The Bass River Lighthouse was built in 1855 with a light that could be seen 12 miles away. It went dark in 1880, was relit in 1881 and kept shining until 1914. West Dennis Harbor sits on the Sound, and the village is part of a town that was settled in 1639 and has been its own town since 1793.
