Landscaping help for Osterville properties

Weekly Lawn Mowing
A steady mowing schedule keeps the grass even and stops it from running away from you during a wet June.
Landscape Maintenance
Mowing, weeding, bed work and leaf removal rolled into one plan, so the whole property is looked after instead of one piece at a time.
Hedge Trimming
Privacy hedges and clipped borders shaped two or three times over the growing season, which keeps them dense at the bottom and neat on top.
Mulch Installation
Fresh mulch around shrubs and trees helps sandy soil hold water through a dry summer and gives the beds a clean, finished look.
Landscape Edging
Crisp lines between lawn and bed that sharpen up the whole yard and keep grass from creeping into the garden.
Fall Cleanups
Leaves and storm debris cleared before winter, so nothing sits on the lawn and smothers it until spring.
A boatbuilding village
Osterville's waterfront, and what it asks of a yard
Osterville wraps around East Bay, West Bay and the Centerville River, with Grand Island, better known as Oyster Harbors, and Little Island just off its shore. Boats have always been part of life here. The Crosby family, known as America's oldest active wooden boatbuilding family, built the Crosby catboat and the Wianno Senior right here in the village.
Living near the water brings a few challenges for a yard. Wind off the bays dries a lawn out faster, salt spray can brown the side of a hedge that faces the water, and sandy soil lets water and nutrients drain straight through. Mowing a little higher, watering deeply but less often and keeping the beds mulched all go a long way. So does keeping grass clippings and leaves out of ponds and storm drains, which Barnstable's rules require anyway.

Osterville lawn tips
Small habits that keep a coastal lawn looking good
None of these take much time. Put together, though, they're often the difference between a lawn that browns out in August and one that holds its color into fall.
- 1
When a strong wind has been coming off the water, a gentle rinse with fresh water helps wash the salt off hedges and shrubs.
- 2
Short clippings left on the lawn break down quickly and return nutrients to the soil, so the grass needs less fertilizer.
- 3
Barnstable doesn't allow fertilizer between November 12 and March 31, so plan any feeding for spring and early fall when the grass can use it.
- 4
Late August into September is usually the best time to overseed on the Cape. The soil is still warm and the weeds are slowing down.

About Osterville, MA
Osterville is a village in the town of Barnstable, on Nantucket Sound. It was first known as Cotacheset, then as Oysterville, after the oysters harvested from its waters. A misspelling on a map is said to have given the village the name it has today.
The Osterville Historical Museum opened in 1931 and has the largest collection of wooden boats in Massachusetts, along with the 1850 Herbert F. Crosby boat shop. Armstrong-Kelley Park is described as the oldest and largest privately owned park on Cape Cod, and it's a lovely place to see what years of patient gardening can do.
