Seven villages, one town

From Sandy Neck to Cotuit, no two yards are quite alike

Barnstable is really seven villages under one name, and it stretches all the way across the Cape. On the north side, homes around Barnstable Harbor and Sandy Neck look out over Cape Cod Bay. On the south side, Centerville, Osterville and Cotuit face Nantucket Sound. Wequaquet Lake sits right in the middle of town.

That spread is why we don't treat every Barnstable lawn the same way. A yard that takes the wind off the bay, a shady lot near the lake and a sunny corner lot in Hyannis all want slightly different mowing, pruning and cleanup timing. We look at the property you actually have before we suggest a plan.

Barnstable's fertilizer rules, in plain English

Barnstable has its own ordinance to keep nitrogen and phosphorus out of its ponds, harbors and bays. Most homeowners have never read it, and it applies to anyone feeding a lawn in town, including in Hyannis and the other villages. Here is what it asks:

The good news is that a thick, well-mowed lawn in decent soil needs a lot less feeding than most people think.

  • No fertilizer or compost between November 12 and March 31.
  • Don't fertilize right before or during heavy rain.
  • Keep fertilizer off driveways, walkways and anywhere it can wash into a storm drain.
  • No phosphorus unless a soil test from the last three years calls for it, or you're starting, rebuilding or repairing a lawn.
  • Keep grass clippings and leaves at least 50 feet away from ponds, drainage ditches and storm drains.
  • A single feeding can't go over 1.0 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, with at least 20% of it slow release, and no more than 3.2 pounds a year.

About Barnstable MA

Barnstable is the largest community on Cape Cod, both in land area and in population, and it is made up of seven villages full of history. It was settled in 1638, incorporated in 1639 and named after Barnstaple in Devon, England. Nearly 49,000 people lived here at the 2020 census.

The town runs from Cape Cod Bay on the north to Nantucket Sound on the south. Sandy Neck and its lighthouse sit along Barnstable Harbor on the bay side, Wequaquet Lake fills the middle of town, and Hyannis Port has long been the Kennedy family's summer home. By the end of the 1800s, some 804 ships called Barnstable home, and you can still see that seafaring past in the old captains' houses along the north side.
