Getting to know the Cape
How Cape Cod is laid out
Cape Cod is 15 towns, all of them part of Barnstable County, and locals split it into four regions. The Upper Cape sits closest to the mainland, the Mid-Cape runs across the middle, and the Lower and Outer Cape carry on out to Provincetown.
Water surrounds all of it. Cape Cod Bay lies between the Cape and the mainland, Nantucket Sound runs along the south shore, Buzzards Bay is off to the southwest and the Atlantic is to the east. For a yard, that means wind and salt close to the shore.
The Cape is young, too. Most of it is glacial moraine and outwash plain, laid down some 16,000 to 20,000 years ago, and the soil on top tends to be sandy, acidic and quick to dry out. That’s why lawns here reward a little extra care with mowing height, watering and timing.

Fertilizer rules, town by town
Several Cape towns set their own limits on lawn fertilizer to protect their ponds, bays and drinking water, and the rules don’t all match. Here’s where things stand in the towns we cover.
Rules can change, so it’s worth checking with your town before you feed. Wherever you are, the basics hold: skip it before heavy rain, keep it off driveways and walkways, and don’t overdo it.

What's the difference between a town and a village?
Cape Cod is made up of 15 towns, and many of them are divided into villages. Hyannis, for example, is one of the seven villages of Barnstable, and West Dennis is one of the five villages of Dennis. Villages have their own names and character, but they follow their town's rules.
Do a town's fertilizer rules cover its villages?
Yes. Barnstable's fertilizer ordinance, for example, applies in all seven of its villages, from Hyannis to West Barnstable.
Do you look after businesses as well as homes?
