Fertilizer rules for West Barnstable lawns
West Barnstable falls under the Town of Barnstable's fertilizer ordinance. With the Great Marshes and Cape Cod Bay this close, it's easy to see why the town takes runoff seriously. The main points:
Healthy soil and good mowing habits do more for a lawn than extra fertilizer, which is good news for the marsh as well.
- Fertilizer and compost wait until spring: none between November 12 and March 31.
- Skip it when a heavy rain is on the way.
- Sweep anything that lands on a driveway or walkway back onto the lawn so it can't reach a storm drain.
- Phosphorus only with a soil test from the past three years that shows a need, or for a new or repaired lawn.
- Clippings and leaves go at least 50 feet from ponds, drainage ditches and storm drains.
- Up to 1.0 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per feeding, at least 20% slow release, and 3.2 pounds a year at most.

About West Barnstable, MA
West Barnstable is one of Barnstable's seven villages, in the northwest part of town. It was settled in 1639, and the West Parish Meetinghouse was finished in 1718, a year after the parish was formed. The railroad reached the village in 1854, and its train station dates to 1911.
From the late 1880s into the 1920s, many Finnish immigrants settled in West Barnstable, and the Old Village Store is one of the village's best known buildings. Cape Cod Community College is here too. The village has produced its share of notable people over the centuries, including James Otis, Mercy Otis Warren, Lemuel Shaw and Captain John “Mad Jack” Percival.
