The north side
Old King's Highway country
Cummaquid belongs to Barnstable Village, the oldest of the town's villages and one of the earliest parts of Cape Cod settled by Europeans. This side of town grew up along the shore and along Old King's Highway, which you know today as Route 6A.
Properties on the north side often have established trees and foundation plantings that have been growing for a long time. Yards like that look best with a light, steady touch. Regular mowing, shaping the hedges a few times a season and clearing leaves out of the beds each fall keep them looking settled rather than overgrown.

Cummaquid questions
Good to know before you call
Is Cummaquid covered by Barnstable's fertilizer rules?
Yes. As part of the town of Barnstable, Cummaquid follows the same fertilizer ordinance as every other village. The main thing to remember is the off season: no fertilizer or compost between November 12 and March 31.
Do you take small jobs?
Absolutely. A single hedge trimming or one fall cleanup is just as welcome as a full season of maintenance, and the estimate is free either way.
When is the best time to overseed a thin lawn?
On the Cape, late summer into early fall is usually best. The soil is still warm, the nights are cooler and the weeds are slowing down, so new grass has a real chance to fill in before winter.

About Cummaquid, MA
Cummaquid is part of Barnstable Village, on the north side of the town of Barnstable. Barnstable Village is the oldest of the town's seven villages and the second oldest part of Cape Cod settled by Europeans, and that long history shows all along Old King's Highway.
The Sturgis Library, built in 1644, is the oldest building in the country that houses a public library. Barnstable Village is also home to the Olde Colonial Courthouse, a jail from 1690, the Trayser Museum, which is now the Coast Guard Heritage Museum, and Crocker Tavern, built around 1754. In 1774 some 1,500 people gathered at the courthouse to protest British rule, and much later, Kurt Vonnegut lived in the village from 1951 to 1971.
