Coastal yards
Salt air, sandy soil and a lawn that still looks good in August
Yarmouth runs from the salt marshes along Cape Cod Bay down to the beaches on Nantucket Sound, with the Bass River along most of its border with Dennis. It's a lovely place to live and, honestly, a tricky place to grow grass.
Cape Cod soil is sandy, acidic and quick to dry out, and yards close to the water also have to put up with wind and salt. None of that means you're stuck with a patchy lawn. It just means the care has to fit the conditions. A few things make a real difference:
- 1
Taller grass shades its own roots and holds on to moisture longer, which matters a lot in sandy soil during a dry July.
- 2
A long soak early in the morning a couple of times a week pushes roots down. Short daily sprinkles keep them shallow and thirsty.
- 3
Cape soil tends to run acidic, but guessing is expensive. A soil test tells you what your lawn actually needs, so nothing gets wasted.
- 4
Wet, matted leaves smother grass and invite mold heading into winter. Leaf removal in the fall is one of the best things you can do for next spring.

About Yarmouth, MA
Yarmouth was incorporated in 1639 as part of Plymouth Colony, which makes it one of the two oldest towns on Cape Cod, along with Sandwich. It grew up on the water, with whaling and merchant shipping, and during the American Revolution it had an active Sons of Liberty group.
Today Yarmouth is three villages, Yarmouth Port, West Yarmouth and South Yarmouth, and home to about 25,000 people. The town has 11 public saltwater beaches and 4 freshwater pond beaches, which is a big part of why people here spend so much of their time outdoors. If you haven't walked the boardwalk out over the marsh at Bass Hole Beach, put it on your list.
