Life along the river

A river that shapes the whole neighborhood

Bass River is both a village in South Yarmouth and the estuary it takes its name from. The river runs from Mill Pond through Follins Pond and down to Nantucket Sound, forming the line between Yarmouth and Dennis, and it's the largest river the Mid-Cape Highway crosses.

Its banks are lined with marinas, a yacht club, a golf course and some popular beaches. For homeowners, the river also brings wind, salty air on the lower stretches and soil that's mostly sand, and all of that makes steady, sensible lawn care count for more than heavy feeding ever will.

How we help riverside homeowners

Freshly mulched garden bed with hostas and a curved edge beside a house
  • Lawn Mowing

Mowing a little higher on sandy riverside lawns helps the grass shade its own roots and hang on to moisture between rains.

  • Yard Cleanups

Leaves, branches and storm debris cleared from the lawn and beds in spring and fall.

  • Weeding

Weeds pulled from beds and borders before they spread, so the garden stays neat all season.

  • Hedge Trimming

Hedges and screening shrubs kept dense and shapely, which matters when they're the thing standing between you and the wind off the water.

  • Mulch Installation

Mulch in the beds holds moisture in fast-draining soil and gives the whole garden a clean finish.

Keeping a lawn healthy this close to the water

What goes on a lawn near the Bass River doesn't always stay there. Rain carries loose fertilizer and grass clippings downhill, and the river and ponds are where they end up. These habits protect the water, and as a bonus, they grow a tougher lawn:

  1. 1

Blow clippings back onto the grass

Clippings left on a driveway or road wash into storm drains with the next rain. On the lawn, they feed the soil instead.

  2. 2

    Leave a buffer

An unmowed strip or a planted border along the water's edge slows runoff and gives wildlife somewhere to live.

  3. 3

    Feed lightly

Established lawns in sandy soil often need very little fertilizer. A light feeding in spring and again in early fall is enough for most.

  4. 4

    Water early in the day

Morning watering loses less to wind and evaporation, which really adds up on a breezy riverside lot.
