Fertilizing in Orleans

What Orleans allows when it comes to fertilizer

Orleans is surrounded by water, from Pleasant Bay and Town Cove to Nauset Harbor, and nitrogen washing off lawns is one of the things the town works hard to keep out of it. Its fertilizer rules set clear limits:

Those limits are lower than many people expect. Still, a lawn that's mowed high, has its clippings left in place and gets seeded in the fall can look good on very little.

On the Atlantic

Nauset, Pleasant Bay and a surprising history

Orleans has seen more history than its size suggests. Its residents stood up to the British warship HMS Newcastle in 1814, the French Cable Station opened in 1898 at the end of a 3,200-mile telegraph cable across the Atlantic, and in July 1918 a German submarine shelled the coast, making Nauset Beach the only place in the United States hit by foreign munitions during World War I.

Living on this stretch of coast means wind, salt and sandy soil. Lawns and gardens here do best with plants that suit the setting and a light hand with feeding, which fits nicely with the town's rules.

About Orleans, MA

Orleans was settled in 1693 and incorporated in 1797. It's made up of three villages, Orleans, East Orleans and South Orleans, with Cape Cod Bay to the northwest and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. About 6,300 people lived here at the 2020 census.

Water is everywhere you look: Pleasant Bay and Little Pleasant Bay, Town Cove, Nauset Harbor, Rock Harbor on the bay side and Nauset Beach on the ocean. The Cape Cod National Seashore, created in 1961, reaches into Orleans, and the French Cable Station is a reminder of the days when messages from Europe came ashore right here.
